Patriotism was part of the past, way past, like part of World War II and before. Then 9-11 shook us up and many of us began to outwardly show our patriotic feelings.
Kelly Cross Oakes' grandfather participated on WWII, her father participated in Korea and former husband, Vietnam. Her son, upon college graduation will also seek out a military experience. She has the feeling! Oakes has had patriotism in her family all of her life.
After the deployment into Afghanistan, she put her pencil to paper, since she is a poet and writer and the end product was "Dear American Soldier". This is a poem playing tribute to the American Military.
She showed her poem to friends who encouraged her to continue to pursue her dreams. Hence, Glory First Creations was started and now produces 5"x7" greeting cards with her "Dear American Soldier" poem.
Oakes is an active member of the Blue Star Mothers of Oklahoma. Her poem is now being placed in each box headed for trouble spots around the world.
Her meeting up with Steve Godfrey has increased the patriotic flame for both. He is the son of a career Navy Master Chief Petty Officer and has both relatives and friends serving or previously served in Iraq. He received a briefing about Blue Star Mothers and was given a tour of their new facility off 41st and Sheridan and about their plight for funds to mail packages to the troops. He said their efforts were awesome and has volunteered to finance 600 boxes for mailing before the holidays to the troops.
